In the competitive world of today, there are some candidates that would do just about anything to get potential employees to have a look at their resumes. Unfortunately, that often leads to false resumes containing questionable descriptions. This is where employment verification comes in place, it is a service that contacts the previous employer’s human resources department and the payroll department to ensure that the candidate has provide information that is indeed factual and without any personal bias.

Information is compared on the resumed with the information gathered directly from the source in this type of background check, in order to see if there are any differences in the dates of employment, job titles, and reasons for leaving, and positions held. Through cross-referencing the information with the details that are provided by the candidate, an employer would be able to obtain an invaluable view of the integrity and work experience.

How to Obtain Employment Verification?

The information that is required to obtain employment verification depends on the needs of the company. There are some companies that would require more detail about the employment background depending on the person’s role who is being hired. Additional information includes full name, social security number, current and past addresses, birthday, and the driver license number of the candidate. Other information might also be required for education verification such as the following.
  • Dates of Employment
  • Contact information and address along with the names of the past employers.
  • In case the past employers cannot be reached, there would be additional proof of employment that would be required.
It is important to inform the candidates about the process and which information would be required in order to conduct the background check. Prospective employees should read the consent form with great care before signing it. The background check process would be conducted faster if the correct information is provided at the time of the consent.

Background Screening Regulations

Federal and state laws regulate third-party background screening companies. The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) regulate employment verifications at the federal level and issue guidelines on the matter.

The FCRA has one requirement which the company needs to follow and that is to notify the candidate that the employment verification would be performed. The notice should explain that it would only be used for retention, promotion and hiring purposes. Besides, just explaining the intent for performing the background check, candidates should provide their consent to the employer.

There are various aspects to background screening, from employment and education verifications to criminal record checks. Different checks are done by each company depending on the position being filled.
