Order status and delays.

Background check timing depends on source availability, candidate information, package scope, and jurisdiction. Use this guide to understand what each status usually means.

Status guide

Status What it usually means Client action
DraftThe order has not been submitted.Review candidate details and release forms.
Awaiting candidateThe candidate needs to complete a form or provide information.Remind the candidate through your normal hiring channel.
In progressInformation Direct or a source is researching the report.Watch for follow-up requests.
Source delayA court, school, employer, DMV, lab, or other source needs more time.Check the notes and contact support if timing is urgent.
CompleteThe report is ready for review.Review the report and follow your decision workflow.

Common delay causes

  • Court closures, holidays, clerk backlog, or manual retrieval.
  • Incomplete candidate name, prior name, address, school, employer, or license details.
  • Verification sources that require a paid database, signed release, or manual response.
  • Drug screening scheduling or lab processing time.
  • International source rules, language, country access, or local holidays.

When to escalate

Contact support if a start date is at risk, a candidate says they already responded, a release form was submitted incorrectly, or you need a source-specific explanation for a manager or procurement team.
